Ongoing Discussions on Libyan Sovereign Posts
The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which was launched in Tunisia on Nov. 9, witnessed on Wednesday more discussions on the nomination of figures to head the new executive authority.
The forum came as the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) discussed for the second day in Sirte an array of security issues that pave the way for a ceasefire based on the Geneva talks.
Among the tackled topics were the means of withdrawing foreign fighters from Libya and the return of Libyan National Army (LNA) and Government of National Accord (GNA) forces to their barracks.
Meanwhile, Libyan officials, participating in the LPDF, told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the conferees suggested the names of figures to head the Presidential Council or the next government and the remaining sovereign posts.
Libyan politician Suleiman al-Bayoudi said that the team of the head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, suggested that he remains in his position while reducing the number of the Council’s members.
They also recommended choosing a prime minister from Cyrenaica (Benghazi). Libyan politician Muhammed Mu’in Al-Kikhia will likely become the next prime minister despite Muhammad Al-Barghathi still having chances to be chosen for the post.
Others, however, want the next PM to be from Misrata, but haven’t yet agreed on the name of the PM.
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has stressed that the solution in Libya should be political and bring peace and stability to the region, in line with the UN decisions and outcomes of the Berlin Conference and Cairo Declaration.
During a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, the Egyptian President underscored the importance of the integrity of Libyan territories, the disbanding of militias, the unity of state institutions, and confronting foreign interventions that destabilize the country.
